Carbon filters (Activated Adsorption) are most widely used for the removal of chlorine and to reduce/remove tastes, colors, and odors. But, depending on which carbon is chosen, a wide variety of VOCs (volatile organic carbons), sediments and other halogens may be absorbed. Carbon does not remove ions, such as calcium, magnesium or sodium. Some specific carbons are able to adsorb lead and other heavy metals. Activated carbon filters and systems, if properly designed and applied, provide a useful option for many water treatment needs.
The use of “filters” for making water clearer has been dated back to ancient times. In those ancient times, it was found that using small, dense materials, such as sand, would trap much of the suspended particles in the water, leaving the resulting water clearer and cleaner looking. Today’s multimedia filters still use the same basic principle. However, multiple (typically 3 or 4) different types and sizes of media are used. WaterProfessionals offers many different engineered multi-media filters for a variety of needs and uses.
Both ultrafiltration and nanofiltration utilize semi-permeable membrane technology. The membrane performance differences are based on pore sizes of the surface. Nanofiltration membrane pore size is larger than Reverse Osmosis, but smaller than ultrafilters. Depending on the material and manufacturer, nanofilters can remove suspended solids and between 50% and 90% of dissolved ions. Ultrafilter membrane pore size is smaller than micro-filters, but larger than nanofilters. Ultrafilters also remove a range of suspended solids, but have no capacity for ion reduction/removal.
