What is Auto Deionizer?

Automatic deionizers, or demineralizers, utilize the reversible exchange of ions between an aqueous solution and solid polymer resin beads to achieve rigorous water purity and pH control. By substituting undesirable impurities with hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions, these systems produce the high-purity water essential for demanding environments, including nuclear facilities, pharmaceutical operations, and complex industrial manufacturing.

The core of the system relies on specialized cation and anion exchange resins. Cation resins remove positive ions (such as Ca+2, Mg+2, and Fe+2), while anion resins target negative ions (like Cl-1 and SO4-2). Because anion resin is less dense and yields a lower exchange capacity per volume, auto deionizers are typically engineered with a 2:3 volumetric ratio of cation to anion resin to obtain equal total exchange capabilities. Depending on your target effluent quality, systems can be configured as two-bed units utilizing separate vessels, or as mixed-bed units containing an intimate mixture of both resins. Both configurations utilize engineered retention elements, such as slotted cylinders or specialized screens, to safely contain the 0.5 mm resin beads while maintaining optimal hydraulic flow.

To ensure continuous operation without manual intervention, these systems feature precision controls that manage the entire in-plant regeneration cycle. Upon resin exhaustion, the system automatically initiates a backwash sequence, followed by drawing specific volumes of regenerant chemicals at set flow rates—typically hydrochloric or sulfuric acid to restore the cation resin, and sodium hydroxide (caustic) for the anion resin. For mixed-bed configurations, a carefully controlled backwash hydraulically separates the distinct resins before dual manifolds independently distribute the acid and caustic. After precisely timed slow and fast rinses, the system is immediately returned to service, delivering a reliable, high-volume supply of demineralized water.

Multiple Industries:

Why WaterProfessionals?

For over 42 years, WaterProfessionals has engineered custom deionization solutions that scale from critical laboratory benchtop units to large-capacity industrial trailers. Unlike single-brand providers, we utilize a vendor-agnostic approach to source the best equipment for your specific application, ensuring compliance with rigorous ASTM, CLSI, and CAP purity standards where required.

For facilities seeking to minimize operational risk, our Service Deionization (SDI) platform delivers flows from 0.5 to 500 GPM via portable exchange tanks, effectively eliminating the need for on-site chemicals, hazardous waste treatment, and OSHA compliance training.

Whether you require a permanent installation or emergency response within 24 hours, our application engineers design systems that balance capital constraints with operational performance, offering flexible purchase, lease, or pay-per-gallon rental options.
